Working Part Time

Looking for part-time work? It’s not as much hassle as you might think as long as you are flexible. There’s always the old stand-by: the wanted ads in the newspaper. That might be a good place to start. There are also many web sites that have part-time work ads posted. Put the term “part-time work” or “part-time employment” in your chosen search engine and see what comes up. There are several Job Boards that specialise in such positions and have particular sectors advertising a range of part time and temporary postitions.

Another avenue to pursue is government work if you are city based. Go to your state’s official web site and find the “employment” area. Next, do the same thing for your county and your city. In this economy, there are probably greater opportunities for part-time work than full-time work because governments are feeling the pinch and cannot afford to hire full-time employees. Another thing to consider is whether there are any universities or colleges nearby? They regularly have part-time work or temporary work available. Temporary work is when a job is offered for a specific length of time, perhaps six to twelve months. Sometimes offices need temporary help to tide them over while an employee is out on sick leave.

If you are a college graduate, your alumni office should be able to provide you with employment help. Often the alumni office works with the career services department on site to link former students with available opportunities. Companies often contact university career offices when they want the opportunity to reach a large audience with Job vacancies. If you are a member of a religious group, try to network with the local community at your church, synagogue, or mosque. Often jobs are located through word of mouth from people you are associated with.

Finally, you can look in your local Yellow Pages or business directory under “employment agencies – temporary. You will find many companies who will assist you in getting a part-time job. You will probably want to save this option as a last resort because using an agency will cost you money. The agency will take a percentage of your wages for providing the service of recommending you to an employer.

Do not forget the option of seasonal work. During the holidays, companies often hire part-time staff. Also, during tax time, the Internal Revenue Service also need temporary workers as well.

Many people are fortunate enough to take part time or temporary position within a company that leads to an offer of full time employment.
